Is there a special diet for thyroid problems?

No food can cure hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism — medicine does that. But what and when you eat can help your treatment work and make it easier to manage weight and tiredness. The generator above builds a balanced plan, adds a weight-loss deficit if you choose it, and reminds you how to time your tablet.

Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

  • Take levothyroxine correctly: with water on an empty stomach, usually 30–60 minutes before breakfast. Keep calcium and iron supplements, antacids and soy at least 4 hours away, and coffee away from the tablet.
  • Iodine: iodised salt gives enough for most people in India. Extra iodine or kelp supplements can make thyroid problems worse.
  • Goitrogens: cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and soy are healthy when cooked and eaten in normal amounts.
  • Weight: once your levels are normal, weight loss works through the same calorie deficit as for anyone else.

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

  • Your body burns more energy, so you may lose weight and feel hungry — eat regular, protein-rich meals.
  • Protect bones with calcium and vitamin D; hyperthyroidism can thin bones.
  • Avoid extra iodine (supplements, seaweed) unless your doctor advises it.

Frequently asked questions

What foods should thyroid patients avoid?

There are no forbidden everyday foods. Avoid taking your thyroid tablet with food, tea, coffee, milk, soy, iron or calcium, and avoid iodine or kelp supplements unless prescribed.

Can I eat cabbage and cauliflower with hypothyroidism?

Yes. Cooked cruciferous vegetables in normal amounts are healthy. Only very large amounts of raw vegetables or juices might matter, and only if iodine intake is low.

Can I lose weight with hypothyroidism?

Yes. Once your thyroid levels are controlled with medicine, a steady calorie deficit, protein at every meal and regular exercise work as they do for anyone.
