What is the best diet for type 2 diabetes?

There is no single “diabetic diet”, but the same principles work for almost everyone: similar amounts of carbohydrate at each meal, carbs that raise blood sugar slowly (whole grains, dal, millets, vegetables), protein and fibre at every meal, and very little sugar. If you are overweight, losing even 5–10% of your weight can improve blood sugar and, for many people with recent type 2 diabetes, bring it into remission. The generator removes sugary and high-GI foods, favours fibre and protein, and adds a 500-calorie deficit if you choose weight loss.

The diabetes plate

Part of plate What to put there
Half Non-starchy vegetables and salad
Quarter Protein — dal, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken, tofu
Quarter Whole grains — 1–2 multigrain, jowar or bajra rotis, or a small bowl of brown rice or millet

Foods to limit

  • Sugar, jaggery, honey, sweets and sweetened drinks
  • Fruit juice (whole fruit in small portions is fine)
  • Maida, white bread, biscuits
  • Large portions of white rice and potatoes
  • Fried snacks

Take insulin or tablets such as glimepiride? Do not skip meals or cut calories sharply without talking to your doctor — it can cause dangerous low sugars. Pregnant? Use the gestational diabetes diet plan. Check your risk with our diabetes risk score.

Frequently asked questions

Can a diabetic eat rice or roti?

Yes, in controlled portions. Prefer brown rice, millets or multigrain roti, and always eat them with dal, vegetables and protein, which slow the rise in blood sugar.

Which fruits are good for diabetes?

Guava, apple, pear, orange, berries, papaya and pomegranate in small portions (one fruit at a time), eaten whole rather than as juice.

Can type 2 diabetes be reversed with diet?

Many people with recent type 2 diabetes who lose significant weight (often 10–15 kg) can bring blood sugar back to normal without medicine. Do this under medical supervision.
