Why diet matters at menopause

As oestrogen falls, women lose bone faster, heart-disease risk rises, and weight tends to move to the tummy as metabolism and muscle mass drop. Food cannot stop menopause, but it can protect your bones, heart and weight. The generator above puts calcium-rich foods first, adds a daily calcium boost, keeps protein higher to protect muscle, and offers a gentle 400-calorie deficit if you want to lose weight.

Key nutrients after 45

Nutrient Daily target Sources
Calcium 1,000 mg (1,200 mg after 50) Milk, curd, paneer, ragi, sesame, tofu, leafy greens
Vitamin D 600–800 IU Sunlight, eggs, fish, fortified foods; supplements if low
Protein About 1–1.2 g per kg Dal, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken, soy
Fibre 25 g or more Whole grains, dal, vegetables, fruit, seeds

Can food help hot flushes?

Some women find spicy food, hot drinks, caffeine and alcohol trigger hot flushes, so it is worth keeping a note. Soy foods contain plant oestrogens; studies show at most a small effect, but they are a healthy protein either way. Effective treatments for severe symptoms exist — including hormone therapy — so talk to your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Why do women gain weight during menopause?

Lower oestrogen shifts fat to the tummy, and muscle loss with age lowers the calories you burn. A small calorie deficit, protein at every meal and strength training help.

How much calcium do I need after menopause?

About 1,200 mg a day for women over 50, ideally from food, plus enough vitamin D. Your doctor may suggest a supplement if your diet falls short.

Do soy foods help menopause symptoms?

They may slightly reduce hot flushes for some women. Soy, tofu and soy milk are healthy foods, but they are not a substitute for medical treatment.
