A diet plan that follows Jain food rules

Most diet plans are full of onion, garlic and potatoes, which makes them hard to follow for Jain families. Our generator has a built-in Jain option: every meal leaves out onion, garlic, potato, carrot, beetroot, radish and other root vegetables, as well as eggs, meat and fish. Choose your goal above — weight loss, pregnancy, PCOS, thyroid, weight gain and more — and the Jain option is already selected.

Jain-friendly foods we use

  • Grains and millets: wheat, jowar, bajra, ragi, rice, oats, sabudana, foxtail millet
  • Protein: moong, chana, toor and masoor dal, rajma, paneer, curd, milk, tofu, nuts
  • Vegetables: lauki, turai, tinda, bhindi, cabbage, capsicum, tomato, cucumber, pumpkin, leafy greens
  • Flavour: jeera, hing, ginger (dry ginger for strict Jains), haldi, ajwain, lemon, fresh coriander

Getting enough protein on a Jain diet

Without eggs and with fewer beans on some days, protein can run low. Include a dal or paneer at every main meal, curd or milk once or twice a day, and roasted chana or nuts as snacks. If you avoid green leafy vegetables on certain tithis, add extra dal, sesame and ragi those days for iron and calcium.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight on a Jain diet?

Yes. Weight loss depends on calories and protein, not onion or potato. Choose “Weight loss” above for a calorie-counted Jain plan.

Is ginger allowed in a Jain diet?

Fresh ginger is a root, so strict Jains use dry ginger powder (sonth) instead. Our plans mention ginger only as an optional flavour.

Is the plan suitable for chauvihar (no food after sunset)?

Yes — have dinner before sunset and skip the late snack; the day’s calories can be shifted to earlier meals.
