What is the best diet for gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is high blood sugar that starts in pregnancy, usually found on the glucose test at 24–28 weeks. The aim of the diet is not to eat less — you and your baby still need the extra energy of pregnancy — but to spread carbohydrates evenly through the day and choose ones that raise blood sugar slowly. The generator above keeps your full pregnancy calories, removes sweets and sugary or high-GI foods, and adds a bedtime snack.

How to build a GDM-friendly meal

  • Half the plate: non-starchy vegetables and salad
  • A quarter: protein — dal, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken, tofu
  • A quarter: low-GI carbs — 1–2 multigrain, jowar or bajra rotis, or a small bowl of brown rice or millet
  • Eat every 2–3 hours: 3 meals and 2–3 small snacks

Typical blood sugar targets

When Target (mg/dL) Target (mmol/L)
Fasting (morning) below 95 below 5.3
1 hour after a meal below 140 below 7.8
2 hours after a meal below 120 below 6.7

Your doctor may give you slightly different targets — always follow theirs.

Sample day: Indian vegetarian GDM diet (2nd trimester)

Time What to eat
Breakfast 2 moong dal chillas with mint chutney
Mid-morning 1 guava or apple + 5 almonds
Lunch 2 jowar rotis, 1 bowl dal, 1 bowl mixed vegetable sabzi, salad, curd
Evening 1 bowl roasted makhana + green tea (no sugar)
Dinner 1 bowl vegetable daliya + 1 bowl dal + salad
Bedtime 1 small bowl plain curd + 5 almonds

Foods to avoid with gestational diabetes

  • Sugar, jaggery, honey, sweets and mithai
  • Fruit juice, soft drinks and sweetened tea or coffee
  • Maida, white bread, biscuits, bakery items
  • Large portions of white rice, potatoes and sabudana
  • Very sweet fruits in large amounts (mango, chikoo, grapes) — small portions with a meal are better

Most women’s blood sugar returns to normal after delivery, but GDM raises your chance of type 2 diabetes later, so a glucose test 6–12 weeks after birth and a healthy diet afterwards matter. After delivery, switch to our postpartum diet plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat rice with gestational diabetes?

Yes, in small portions — about half to one small bowl, ideally brown rice or millet, eaten with dal, vegetables and curd. Check your blood sugar after rice meals to see how you respond.

Which fruits are good for gestational diabetes?

Guava, apple, pear, orange, berries and pomegranate, in small portions. Eat whole fruit with nuts or curd instead of juice.

Should I eat less to control my sugar?

No. Cutting calories too much is not recommended in pregnancy. Spread carbs evenly and choose low-GI foods; your doctor may add tablets or insulin if diet is not enough.

Does gestational diabetes go away after delivery?

In most women it goes away after the baby is born. You should have a blood sugar test 6–12 weeks after delivery and regular checks after that.
