What should you eat with PCOS?

There is no single “PCOS diet”, but international guidelines agree on the basics: eat mostly whole, minimally processed foods, choose low-glycaemic (low-GI) carbohydrates, include protein and fibre at every meal, and — if you are overweight — create a modest calorie deficit. Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, and these habits help keep blood sugar and insulin steadier.

The generator above asks what matters most to you. For weight loss it sets a 500-calorie daily deficit (never below 1,200); for regular periods or getting pregnant it uses a gentler deficit only if your BMI is 25 or more. Every plan swaps white rice and refined flour for millets, oats, brown rice, dal and beans.

Sample day: 1,400-calorie Indian vegetarian PCOS diet

Meal What to eat Approx. kcal
Breakfast 2 moong dal chillas with mint chutney 280
Mid-morning 5 almonds + 2 walnuts 110
Lunch 2 jowar rotis, 1 bowl chana dal, 1 bowl cabbage sabzi, salad 460
Evening 1 bowl sprouts chaat 150
Dinner 1 bowl foxtail-millet khichdi with moong dal + cucumber salad 400

Best foods for PCOS

  • Low-GI carbs: jowar, bajra, ragi, oats, brown rice, quinoa, whole-wheat roti
  • Protein: dal, chana, rajma, paneer, curd, tofu, eggs, fish, chicken
  • Fibre: vegetables, salads, sprouts, whole fruits (guava, apple, berries, orange)
  • Healthy fats: nuts, seeds (flax, pumpkin), olive or mustard oil in small amounts

Foods to limit

  • Sugar, sweets, sugary drinks and packaged juices
  • Maida, white bread, biscuits and bakery items
  • Deep-fried snacks and processed foods
  • Large portions of white rice

Does diet really help PCOS?

Yes. In women with PCOS who are overweight, losing 5–10% of body weight can improve cycle regularity, ovulation and insulin resistance. Diet works best together with regular activity — at least 150 minutes a week — and good sleep. Some women also need medicines such as metformin or treatment for acne and hair growth; your doctor will guide you.

Trying to conceive? Use the ovulation calculator — with irregular cycles, choose “My cycles are irregular”.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best diet for PCOS?

A diet built on low-GI whole grains, dal and beans, vegetables, fruit and lean protein, with little sugar and refined flour. The guideline does not favour one named diet over another — the best plan is one you can follow long term.

Can I eat rice with PCOS?

Yes, in moderate portions. Brown rice or millets are better choices, and pairing rice with dal, vegetables and curd lowers its effect on blood sugar.

Is milk bad for PCOS?

There is no strong evidence that you must avoid dairy. Plain milk, curd and paneer are good protein sources; if you notice they worsen acne, you can choose “No dairy” in the generator.

How fast can I lose weight with PCOS?

About 0.5 kg a week with a 500-calorie daily deficit. Weight loss can feel slower with PCOS, but even 5% loss often improves periods.
