Lie on your left side or sit comfortably. Count every kick, roll, swish or flutter. From 28 weeks, try to count at the same time each day, when your baby is usually active.

Your sessions

If your baby is moving less than usual, the pattern changes, or you cannot feel movements, contact your doctor or maternity unit straight away — do not wait until the next day, and do not rely on a counter or Doppler to reassure you.

Why count baby kicks?

Your baby’s movements are a sign they are well. From around 16–24 weeks you will start to feel flutters, and by the third trimester most babies have a regular pattern of active and quiet times. Getting to know your baby’s usual pattern helps you notice quickly if something changes.

How to use the kick counter

  1. Pick a time when your baby is usually active — often after a meal or in the evening.
  2. Lie on your left side or sit with your feet up.
  3. Tap Start counting, then tap once for every kick, roll, swish or flutter.
  4. Many doctors use the “count to 10” method: most babies make 10 movements well within 2 hours, often much sooner.

When to call your doctor or hospital

  • Your baby is moving less than usual, or the pattern has changed
  • You cannot feel movements at all
  • Fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours with the count-to-10 method

Do not wait until the next day, and do not use a home Doppler to reassure yourself. Babies do not move less towards the end of pregnancy — the movements may feel different, but they should continue.

Close to your due date? Keep the contraction timer handy.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start counting kicks?

Many doctors suggest paying attention to movements daily from about 28 weeks (26 weeks in higher-risk pregnancies). Before that, movements are less regular.

How many kicks are normal?

There is no single normal number. What matters is your baby’s own pattern. With the count-to-10 method, 10 movements usually take much less than 2 hours.

Is my kick history private?

Yes. Your sessions are saved only in this browser on your device — nothing is sent to us.
