What does a growth percentile mean?

A percentile compares your child with healthy children of the same age and sex. If your baby’s weight is on the 40th percentile, 40 out of 100 healthy babies of that age weigh less and 60 weigh more. There is no “best” percentile — a baby on the 10th percentile can be just as healthy as one on the 90th. What matters most is that your child grows steadily along their own curve over time.

This calculator uses the WHO Child Growth Standards (0–5 years), which describe how healthy breastfed children grow in the best conditions and are used in India, the USA (under 2 years) and over 140 countries.

How to read the result

Percentile What it usually means
Below 3rd Below the usual range — discuss with your doctor
3rd–15th Smaller side of normal
15th–85th Middle range
85th–97th Larger side of normal
Above 97th Above the usual range — discuss with your doctor

Also talk to your doctor if your child crosses two major percentile lines (for example, from the 50th to below the 15th), or if weight and length percentiles are very far apart.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 5th percentile bad for a baby?

Not necessarily. Many small but healthy babies grow steadily along a low percentile, especially if their parents are small. Your doctor looks at the trend over time, not one number.

Which growth chart is used in India?

Indian doctors use the WHO standards for children under 5 years, which is what this calculator uses. For older children, IAP growth charts are used.

Why is my baby’s length percentile different from weight?

Weight and length often sit on different percentiles. It is only a concern if the gap is very large or keeps growing — your doctor may then check weight-for-length.
